In Arabic, shirk, musharakah mean a partnership in property and sovereignty. The ownership of something by more than one person is also called shirk or musharakah.
In religious terms, shirk means attributing a partner to Allah(the One and Only Creator) either in His essence (in number) or in His actions. In other words, shirk means(polytheism) "attributing one of the attributes of divinity to another."
If this is obvious and conscious, it is called open shirk (ash-shirk al-jalī); if it is covert and unconscious, it is called hidden shirk (ash-shirk al-hafī).
They are also known as major and minor. Major shirk is claiming to be God's partner, which is the greatest form of denial and disbelief. Minor shirk is taking the approval of others other than God into account when performing certain actions. Hypocrisy fall into this category.
The Quran fundamentally speaks of neither atheism nor irreligion. For example, the "Dahris," who claim that life and death are acts of time, not God (see Jāsiyya, 24), are not atheists, but those who replace God with time, or rather, those who deify time. The Quran complains about false gods and false religions. Humanity calls those who do not believe in their own understanding of God an atheist, and those who do not believe in their own understanding of religion an irreligious. In reality, there are neither atheists nor irreligious; there are those who serve false gods and those who surrender to false religion. In other words, there are polytheists...
A reading of the Quran reveals that the prophets' struggle was largely against false religion, not against atheism or irreligion. The greatest enemy of the prophets and the Quran is polytheism, and polytheism is not atheism, but rather the most virulent and stubborn religion in history. The Meccan oligarchy, the Prophet Muhammad's arch-enemy, fought him not in the name of atheism or irreligious, but in the name of polytheism, the religion of their ancestors. In other words, Prophet Muhammad fought against false religion to establish the dominance of true religion. The struggles of Moses and Jesus were also against false religion, not against atheism. Jesus was crucified not by atheists or irreligious, but by Jewish religious leaders, the rabbis.
