Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin.
Verily! Allah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom he pleases sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, has indeed strayed far away.
Allah did not forbid polytheism for His own sake. What harm would Allah suffer from polytheism? So why did Allah forbid polytheism? He forbade it for the sake of humanity, because it is the greatest injustice to humankind.
And (remember) when Luqman said to his son when he was advising him: "O my son! Join not in worship others with Allah. Verily! Joining others in worship with Allah is a great Zulm (oppression - injustice) indeed.
Polytheism destroys a person's inner world, stripping them of their humanity. It eliminates their freedom. You become willing to rent out your mind to someone. Every polytheist seeks someone to rent their mind to. Every polytheist declares the one above them a pharaoh; they become the pharaoh of the one below them. Every polytheist either becomes a slave or enslaves others. Polytheism is a mill that grinds away freedom. Therefore, that person can no longer be human, an individual, a personality, a person. They are exhausted, they cease to exist. That person can no longer be human. As a result, a world emerges where slaves and masters rule, injustice increases, ignorance grows, exploitation intensifies, and ultimately, oppression reigns.
We said that polytheism destroys freedom. Polytheism is also something that destroys your sense of responsibility. You begin to feel no responsibility anymore. Why? You say, "I've followed so-and-so, they will save me!" You place an intermediary between yourself and God. That intermediary becomes the one. You think you won't be held responsible for anything. You think you will be saved by following wherever they go. In essence, you rent out your humanity, your soul. This is a sale, a person selling themselves. Of course, in return, those who buy your self maintain their own order through ignorance, exploitation, and oppression(prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control).
The relationship between polytheism and oppression is one of the most important aspects to consider. The Quran describes polytheism as "a great injustice-oppression," thus indirectly emphasizing that all forms of oppression are either the product of polytheism or directly caused by it. The single greatest enemy is oppression, not this or that foreign theology or religion. The Quran does not declare any belief as an enemy. The only enemy declared is oppression:
And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (worshipping of others along with Allah) and (all and every kind of) worship is for Allah (Alone).
But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun (oppressors - the polytheists)
The word "zulm" (oppression/tyranny) appears in the Quran nearly 300 times, along with its derivatives. Derived from the same root as "zulm" (darkness), the word "zulm" is used in the Quran to mean disbelief, polytheism, evil, oppression, torture, and injustice. The vast majority of linguists and commentators define the meaning of "zulm" in Quranic terminology as: "To place something outside its proper place" (Raghib, entry on zulm). This indicates that oppression causes corruption and alienation in the order of existence. In this sense, the greatest oppressor is humanity itself, because the only being that disrupts the order of creation and the balance and harmony in nature is humanity. Indeed, when the Quran speaks of the angels complaining about human evil, it points to two typical evils: mischief and bloodshed (2:30). In verse (33:72), ignorance and injustice are mentioned as two typical shortcomings of humankind.
The Quran clearly shows that all injustices are the product of human hands. Allah does not commit injustice in the slightest sense (see 4/40; 10/44; 18/49). As long as the creative order is preserved without disruption, injustice is never an issue (see 14/34; 3/182; 8/51; 22/10; 50/29).
The act of "placing things outside their proper context" that causes injustice can sometimes be related to location and sometimes to time. Therefore, injustice can arise from both deficiency and excess. For example, usury and extravagance, as forms of injustice, cause a decrease in some people and an increase in others. Some people possessing or spending more than they need will result in others acquiring less than they need, which is a complete injustice.
The opposite of injustice is justice, which means 'doing everything in its proper place, putting things in their rightful place'.
The concept of oppression in the Quran simultaneously expresses three negative aspects that constitute polytheism (shirk).
1. Despotism in governance,
2. Imperialism (exploitation and invasion),
3. Ignorance (hostility towards reason and knowledge).
The word "oppression" (zulm) inherently contains despotism, invasion, and darkness. In the language of the Quran, darkness is another name for ignorance. The miraculous power of the Quran's wording allows it to express all its enemies with a single word: oppression. Oppression has become synonymous with both enmity towards reason and enmity towards truth and justice.
