AL-AKRAM

 

The name Ekrem means "The most generous, the possessor of the greatest kerem (generosity)." He is the one who possesses the level of perfection in generosity, acts generously toward His servants, treats them with tolerance despite their ingratitude, accepts their repentances, and whose generosity has no end.

In the dictionary, Kerem means "to give without expecting anything in return."

It appears in only one place in the Qur'an.

 

(96:1-3)

1. Read(Proclaim)! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists),

2. created man from a clinging mass(embryo).

3. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous,

 

 

DHUL-JALALI WAL-IKRAM

 

This name, which appears as a set phrase, means the Possessor of majesty and bounty, greatness and generosity, splendor and blessing. Even though He is the Possessor of highness and sublimity, He does not merely settle for acting generously toward His servant; He also bestows the virtue of generosity upon His servant. He does not stop at offering bounty to His servant; He endows the servant with such a grace (kerem) that enables them to offer bounty to others.

 

(55:26-28)

26. Whatsoever is on it (the earth) will perish.

27. And there will remain the Face(Presence) of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor(Dhul-Jalal wal-Ikram).

28. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

 

(55:78)

Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor(Dhul-Jalal wal-Ikram).

 

Do not think of Allah, the Possessor of Majesty (Celal), as a merciless, pitiless deity who withholds His power or keeps His grace to Himself. He is such a Possessor of Majesty that within this majesty, there is also bounty (ikram). This reminds us that Allah’s greatness and majesty do not prevent Him from being bountiful; rather, His bounty is an inseparable part of His majesty.

 

Majesty (Celal) is a name that encompasses meanings of greatness, awe, splendor, and wrath (kahır). Allah did not intend to take such a name directly [alone] as a name for His Essence (Zat). There is only one reason for this: He is the Most Gracious (Ar-Rahman) and the Most Merciful (Ar-Rahim).

 

AL-KARĪM 

 

The name Al-Karīm signifies the Possessor of infinite generosity and virtue. He is the unique and unparalleled source of virtue, the most superior and most precious, the One who knows no bounds in His bounty and generosity. He is the most generous toward His servants, and He is the One for whose pleasure the greatest acts of generosity are performed.

 

(82:5-7)

5. Each soul will know what it had sent ahead and what it had left behind.

6. O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous(Bountiful),

7. Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?

 

Although the names Al-Akram and Al-Karīm may seem identical in meaning, they differ in their theological focus:

 

Al-Akram relates to Allah’s Essence; it describes who He is in Himself.

Al-Karīm relates to His Actions; it describes how He interacts with His creation.

 

The difference can be summarized with this striking principle:

"To make someone karīm (generous) is the work of the One who is Akram (the Most Generous)."

 

Al-GHANĪ

 

 

The name Al-Ghanī means the Absolutely Rich, the One whose wealth/richness has no bounds. He is never in need of anyone under any circumstances, yet He fulfills the needs of everyone. Al-Ghanī is the unique and unparalleled, absolute and infinite Subject who is self-sufficient and, at the same time, sufficient for all things and everyone.

 

The attribute of limitless generosity, Karīm, belongs only to the One who is limitlessly rich.

 

(35:15)

O mankind! it is you who stand in need of Allah, but Allah is Rich (Free of all wants and needs), Worthy of all praise.

 

 

 

EL-HAMID

 

Al-Hamid is the sole and absolute authority for all praise and glorification, the one who is unique and peerless in being praised, and the one who more than deserves all unique and peerless praises. It means the mandatory destination for the praise of every being, the one who never lets the praises offered to His Essence go to waste, the one who rightfully rewards whoever praises Him, never making the praiser regret having praised, but on the contrary, making them regret not having praised more.

And they are guided unto goodly speech(Qur'an) and they are guided to the path of Him, Who is Worthy of all praises.
