Al-Aziz means the authority who is most honorable and always precious, perfect, and the owner of the highest might (izzah) and glory. It expresses that the owner has no equal or peer in superiority.
Accordingly, an important thing that is rarely found, intensely needed, and difficult to reach, obtain, or know is called aziz. The pinnacle of being rare—that is, having a scarce existence—is being "One." For there is nothing less than "one." For a thing to be "one" means the existence of its equivalent is impossible. This is only Allah. The pinnacle of being needed is that everything needs Him in every matter; both in coming into existence and in maintaining its existence. Only Allah possesses such perfection. The pinnacle of being difficult to reach is the impossibility of attaining Him in terms of encompassing His essence—in other words, knowing Him as He truly deserves. Only Allah possesses such perfection, for only Allah knows Himself. Therefore, since only Allah possesses the perfection of these qualities gathered in the name Al-Aziz, the Absolute Aziz is only He.
The name Aziz appears in 88 places in the Qur'an. However, it is never used alone in any of them.
It is used together with the name Al-Hakim in 46 places. Allah is most superior and very precious; He is the source of infinite might and unlimited honor, but while giving a share of this might and honor to His servants, He acts with wisdom.
"Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own, who shall recite unto them Your Verses and instruct them in the Book (this Quran) and Al-Hikmah, and sanctify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."
It is used with the name Ar-Rahim in 13 places. He is most superior; His superiority is infinite and absolute. Yet, despite being so superior, He does not withhold His mercy from His servants. He is as merciful and compassionate as He is superior.
7. Do they not observe the earth, how much of every good kind We cause to grow therein?
8. Verily, in this is an Ayah (proof or sign), yet most of them are not believers.
9. And verily, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
It means the Magnificent, perfect in greatness, uniquely and incomparably grand, sublime in glory, the one of absolute and infinite majesty whom no other being can ever equal by growing.
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, and He is the Most High, the Most Great.
It means the infinitely and absolutely Great, uniquely and incomparably grand. Intellects fall into helplessness in conceiving His greatness. He is not "great" in comparison to any other being. He is the one who is great beyond every measure of magnitude, such that no perception can reach the secret of His greatness.
And intercession does not benefit with Him except for one whom He permits. [And those wait] until, when terror is removed from their hearts, they will say [to one another], "What has your Lord said?" They will say, "The truth." And He is the Most High, the Grand.
It means the Transcendent Being, absolutely and infinitely grand, whose exaltedness has no end, the supreme and sublime Subject who is beyond all kinds of consciousness and limitation. The verb Ta'ala means "He became transcendent, He became exalted, He became grand."
8.Allah knows what every female carries and what the wombs lose [prematurely] or exceed. And everything with Him is by due measure.
9.[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Grand, the Exalted.
Allah is unreachable and transcendent in His Essence (Zat), but in His Attributes, He is closer to man than his jugular vein. If even Allah's transcendence is expressed with Al-Mute'al—a name derived from a verb—it is so that man does not fall into the deviation of a "Distant God." This (absolute distance) leads to absolute abstraction (tenzih). Absolute abstraction leads to a conception of a god who does not intervene in life and is unreachable. This conception is the starting point of all idolatry. The way to be close to the "distant one" is to find intermediaries. Revelation calls every form of attempting to establish an indirect and mediated relationship with Allah—instead of a direct and unmediated one—Shirk (associating partners with Allah).
It means the Most High of the high, absolutely sublime, unique and incomparable in greatness, the infinite and absolute Subject.
That is because, when Allah was called upon alone, you disbelieved; but if others were associated with Him, you believed. So the judgement is with Allah, the Most High, the Grand."
It means the one who is superior and higher than everything, whose rank is supreme, who is unique and incomparable in height, and who also elevates and makes others superior.
(He is Allah) Owner of High Ranks and Degrees, the Owner of the Throne. He sends the Inspiration by His Command to any of His slaves He wills, that he (the person who receives inspiration) may warn (men) of the Day of Mutual Meeting (i.e. The Day of Resurrection).
It means the Most Glorious, the possessor of unique and incomparable honor, honorable in essence, perfect in action, generous in grace, limitless in bounty, and sublime in glory.
They said: "Do you wonder at the Decree of Allah? The Mercy of Allah and His Blessings be on you, O the family [of Ibrahim (Abraham)]. Surely, He (Allah) is All-Praiseworthy, All-Glorious."
